How to Write Resume Action Words

How to Write Resume Action WordsWriting resume action words can be one of the most crucial steps in your career planning. These are the phrases you use to describe your skills and accomplishments so that employers know you are a perfect match for their open position. Unfortunately, most people take this step lightly, thinking that they just need to write the information in the right order in order to make it look professional.Writing resume action words is not easy, especially if you don't fully understand what these words mean. What you do want to do is to realize that there are many strategies to accomplish this goal. Some people think that a word, phrase or sentence is enough. That's a mistake. If you want to find out more about how to write resume action words, you should study the literature so that you know what you're doing, not just what to do. This way, you'll know what to avoid, and what phrases to emphasize. One strategy to think about is to put the right attitude into your resume. It is important to let potential employers know how you see yourself, or how you expect to be treated. If you don't feel good about what you have accomplished, employers may not view you as the best fit for their job openings.Successful persons don't believe they deserve recognition for their efforts. This creates an atmosphere where employers will notice the value of your skills and the purpose for your accomplishments. You can use your own experience to convey your sincerity.Another approach is to mention your qualities that you'd like to see in a potential employer. For example, if you're a person who thrive on positive feedback, and you want to reach an employer with a positive attitude, include this in your resume. Your potential employer wants to hire a professional, so mention your skills and abilities.By putting these ideas into your mind, you can easily come up with more ways to use resume action words so that you can put more value into the document. Think of how t his can improve your chances of landing the job that you're applying for. Take this tip to heart.

Billionaire LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman Says His Masters in Philosophy Has Helped Him More Than an MBA

Billionaire LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman Says His Masters in Philosophy Has Helped Him More Than an MBA When students begin graduate studies in philosophy, they’re typically looking to explore the essence of existence â€" and suffice it to say, most are not getting on a path to riches. But one of Silicon Valley’s most influential billionaires, LinkedIn founder and Greylock Partners investor Reid Hoffman, received his masters degree in philosophy from Oxford in 1993. He was originally planning to go into academia, but decided that his desire to do nothing less than change the world would be more likely in the world of tech. That’s not to say, however, that he abandoned the lessons he learned. In an interview for Business Insider’s podcast “Success! How I Did It,” he explained that his unusual educational background has proven quite helpful throughout his career. Hoffman told us his favorite philosophers are Aristotle, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, and he said that studying them has proven useful in two ways. It honed his critical thinking Hoffman said that “philosophy is a study of how to think very clearly,” and that is useful in both investing and being an entrepreneur, which he said is like being “an all-in investor.” “Formulating what your investment thesis is, what the strategy is, what the risks with the approach are, what kinds of things you would be doing with it, are all greatly aided by the crispness of thinking that comes with philosophical training.” It gave him deep insight into human nature He told us, “I think what every entrepreneur in consumer internet is doing is essentially embodying a theory of human nature as individuals and as a group for how they’ll react to the service, especially if it’s community or network properties, how they’ll interact with each other, how this will fit in their landscape of how they identify themselves and how they communicate or transact with other people. “That’s particularly, of course, part of the reason why at Greylock, I tend to look at networks and marketplaces centrally in my investment thesis, and these kinds of things are the concepts which actually come out of philosophy.” Hoffman said in a recent episode of his podcast “Masters of Scale” that he considers the MBA path to be potentially dangerous for entrepreneurs, because it teaches them to approach business in a safe and ordered way; by studying the essence of human nature, he explained in our interview, he instead had an education into how humans interact with each other and the world â€" his business education came through trial-and-error in the real world. “There’s almost a sense in which part of being an entrepreneur or being an investor is being an applied philosopher or an applied anthropologist,” Hoffman said. The Worst LinkedIn Summary Ever - Work It Daily

The Worst LinkedIn Summary Ever - Work It Daily The Worst LinkedIn Summary Okay folks, I’m going to give it to you straight: There are certain phrases when used in a LinkedIn summary that have the same effect as nails on a chalkboard. In other words, it’s such a turn-off as a hiring manager, it’s hard to focus on your profile as being credible after reading them. This is the profile summary someone asked me to review. I’ve underlined the phrases that make me want to cover my ears and run from my computer screen yelling, “NOOOOO. Not again!” The Worst LinkedIn Summary A dynamic leader with the ability to drive change and proven track record of high accomplishments in various areas. Highly organized individual, believes in empowerment and team work, highly adaptable, strong business sense, effective communicator, result-oriented, and can-do attitude. What makes me cringe when I read this? For starters, the person is being completely subjective. These aren’t facts about them (facts are backed by numbers and statistics). This summary is the person’s opinion of themselves â€" and it comes across as over-confident and canned. Honestly, it’s the worst use of a LinkedIn summary you can possible implement... especially during a job search. If you are looking for a job in 2012, I am begging you not to ruin your profile with an unsubstantiated, over-used summary statement like this one. What should be there instead? Facts, facts, and more facts. Tell me about your accomplishments in as few words as possible, using numbers and statistics to support the truth. An example might be: 15+ years of experience leading teams of 10-200 staff members. Managed 30+ projects ranging from $100K-$1.7M in budget. 200+ hours of presenting and training on a wide variety of subjects including innovation, teamwork and project management. See the difference? In the original summary, the person is claiming to be all those things. In the revised summary they are proving it. When it comes to your LinkedIn summary, remember you need to compel the reader to scroll down the page and look at your work history. These days, bragging won’t make that happen. Stating facts that entice them to see where you accomplished them will. Take Our FREE Quiz! Want to REVEAL your unique professional strengths? Goals and Objectives Creating an Action Plan

Goals and Objectives Creating an Action Plan You probably have many personal and professional goals for how you want your life to go. Depending on your life stage, you will probably have different plans and objectives for your future at various points throughout your life and adjust them based on past experiences. For instance, if you are a student, youre probably thinking acing your courses, meeting your graduation requirements, and landing a job that pays well, uses your skills, and challenges you. If youre already a working professional, your priorities may shift to excelling in your chosen career and getting that promotion. People at a later stage in their lives may have their eye on retirement and earning enough income to support their lifestyles after they take the plunge. We all have short-term goals and long-term goals. Some may be realistic, while other may be a little mora difficult to achieve. Whatever dreams you have about how you want your life to go, the fruchtwein impor tant part is that you develop strategies for making sure you achieve someif not allof your desired outcomes.Thats where an action plan comes in. An action plan is a roadmap for how you will achieve your goals. There are many types of action plans for individuals and larger organizations, but they all share the same purpose to help you achieve your desired outcomes.Creating a general action planRegardless of the specific type of action plan you use, you should make sure it contains certain features and addresses specific topics. These features will ensure that you have a clear vision for what you want to achieve, how you will achieve it, and what success looks like to you. Clearly define your objectives. What do you hope to gain from the plan? Think if this as your mission statement. You are striving toward something, and you need to keep your eyes on the prize. For example, if you want to receive more responsibilities at work toward the ultimate goal of a promotion, be specific about what responsibilities you would like to take on. If you work in fruchtmarketing, for instance, that might mean being the main marketing contact for a specific project or being able to develop marketing plans with or without guidance. Be specific.Being successful is not very specific. Its also not measurable. Rather than using vague terms and concepts, use specific language when creating an action plan.Think about what success means to you. If youre a student, it might mean getting the most out of your education and being able to use it in a job that fits your interests. Be specific about what that job is. Become a medical doctor is much more specific, for instance, than be successful. Create steps that areagainspecific.Achieving a larger goal requires incremental steps. If you want to be a doctor, as in the previous example, there are many steps youll need to take to get there. Youll need to abflug with your undergraduate education, earning a high enough GPA to get into med school, the next step. And so on.Be specific when creating your steps, and make sure the outcomes are measurable. That way youll klnow when you have accomplished each step. Some goals are clear-cutfor instance, youll either get into med school, or you wontwhile others are a bit more vague. If you want to make more money, for example, think about how much you want to make. How much money do you need to earn to reach that goal? Do you want to earn it all at once in a single lump sum, or would you prefer that you earn a better annual salary? These are the kinds of questions you need to ask yourself to make sure youre being specific about your steps and overall goals. Have a schedule.Provide deadlines and dates for when you want to accomplish certain steps. Make sure you implement specific strategies by a specific dateand specify that date in your action plan. You might, for example, state that you want to gather together certain resources that will help you achieve your objectives by the end o f the year. Its a good idea to mark ansicht deadlines in a calendar or planner, if you have one. It will provide another reminder that your deadline is approaching and prompt you to stay on top of your program. Identify people who can help you achieve your goal.If you want a promotion, you cant do it alone. Youll need the help and support of management and possibly your coworkers to get there.Thats true of many goals and objectives. Identify the people who can support you and offer resources to help you succeed, and include them as key figures in your action plan. Create sub-goals.For long-term goals, identify markers and milestones that will help you along the way. For instance, if you have your eye on leading a team, and youre currently working as an assistant, its not going to happen overnight. Instead, set sub-goals or short-term goals that will help you achieve your overarching objective. In this example, short-term objectives might include taking over a specific responsibility. You could also identify holes in your teams current processes and take it upon yourself to fix them. Achieving these short-term objectives will move you toward eventually achieving your larger management goal. Determine your endgame. After you realized your vision, what comes next? Dont just rest on your laurels. (Depending on what your goal is, you probably wont have that option, anyway.) Decide what youre going to do afterward. What will you do once you achieve your goal of leading a team? Think abut what kind of manager youll be. How will you work with your employees? Are there any strategies or programs you want to implement?Think about these kinds of questions as they pertain to your specific goal before you achieve it, so you have an idea for how your life will go later.Structuring an action planThere are many ways to structure your action plan. One common method is using SMART goals. What are SMART goals? The acronym is as followsSpecific Define your overarching goal.Measureable Quantify your goal. Be able to measure the outcome.Attainable Make sure your goal is possible and achievable. Dont frustrate yourself by dreaming too big (although you should strive to challenge yourself).Relevant Your goal should fit in with your personal plans.Time Give yourself a deadline to achieve it.You dont have to use the SMART system, but it does make planning easier. There are also plenty of action plan templates you can download to help organize your action plan. You could even sort the steps into a Google calendar.Whats most important is that you create your plan and follow through. Its your personal program for success, after all.
