3 Great Global Recruitment Stories to Learn From We all know recruitment is a fast-paced industry, and that sometimes means you miss some of the important recruiter news stories from around the world, or you don’t realize how useful they can be for your own development. Here are three recent campaigns and reports that you need to know about. 1. Britain: British Army Recruitment Drive to Increase Diversity The British Army’s new recruitment campaign looks to bust some of the main myths surrounding army life, as many would-be troops assume they cannot be gay, emotional or religious if they want to sign up. CNN reported that this campaign is a shift away from the typical army demographic: white, male, and aged 16-25. Ultimately, the number of ethnic minority soldiers in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is deemed too low, and this could be a good way to change the status quo. The overall number of people in the army also needs a boost, with 4,000 recruits needed to reach the desired goal of 82,000 employees, and there are proposed plans change the army’s slogan, which is currently ‘Be the best’, because of criticism it isn’t inclusive enough. Though there has been a criticism of the campaign for suggesting the army is ‘soft’, there are plenty of takeaways for recruiters here. The advert used stereotype-breaking soldiers to answer questions, explaining how their faith, orientation or personality was respected by the army. Could you actively use current staff to appeal to candidates? Could you feedback candidate concerns to an employer to alter the language of their future vacancies or the information on their website? It’s certainly worth considering if you’re trying to promote a stigmatized or stereotyped employer. 2. China: Alibaba Targets Senior Citizens Online shopping hub Alibaba, based in China, is looking to appeal to an older market by hiring the over-60s for their specialist knowledge. The recruitment drive centers around a new position, ‘Taobao senior user study consultant’, and specifically aims to hire older people who have connections with their peers, such as through community groups or hobbies, as well as an interest in younger generations (perhaps through having their own child). The company is a big deal in China â€" earlier this year, it reported that 30% of all Chinese-based digital jobs are set to be with Alibaba by 2035, fuelled by investing in cloud computing and digital entertainment. Also by 2035, the digital economy is set to make up 48% of the entire Chinese economy. Within a day of these new vacancies being posted online, the company was inundated with CVs, proving that senior citizens are keen to keep working. Like many countries around the world, China is struggling to provide for an aging population, so it’s important to keep older people active and healthy for as long as possible. Perhaps now is the time to start scanning their CVs… 3. India: AirAsia Hit by Recruitment Scams Whilst AirAsia India is genuinely looking to hire candidates right now, many job hunters have been targeted by fake emails supposedly sent from the company. These emails, signed as ‘AirAsia Airlines Limited’, have involved requests for money from candidates: RS9,600, which the senders claim will be used for vague purposes such as ‘interview processing’ and ‘maintenance’. In reality, you should never be asked for money when job hunting, yet many people have been taken in by these bogus emails, sometimes sent by recruitment companies. AirAsia has clarified it never uses recruitment agencies, conducting all its recruitment in-house. The AirAsia India example is part of a larger problem with recruitment scams in India, as reported by the Guardian at the start of 2018. Tales of mysterious employment offers no confirmed address or phone number are common; stories of payments for training are also on the rise. Candidates are advised to be wary of suspicious URLs in emails, as well as confusing job adverts and suspiciously high-paid jobs. As a recruiter, you should be able to reassure candidates that a job is genuine, and you should watch out for scammers trying to use you as an intermediary. Your Searchable Brand on Google is Finally in Your Control...or is it - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What if you had preferences as to which results were returned for each keyword you searched for in Google?   Google will be implementing new technology that will allow users to remove results from their personal searches, and move results up or down.   For instance, if you Googled yourself and had your blog listed 1st and yourname.com 3rd, you could switch them entirely, and even remove your blog listing.   This is obviously bad news for Wikipedia.com, which has purchased almost all keywords and tends to appear in the top three results per keyword you type in. This is only from your view, but I predict that there will be result voting sometime in the future, as Google collects more of our information for advertisers using the popular AdWords program. What this means for your personal brand: First, it may give you the opportunity to increase your Google Quotient, by controlling which results appear on the first page that both exemplify who you are and create a positive PR presence.   Your Google Quotient is the strength of the results listed for your full name, within the first three pages of Google.   Strength is noted as relevancy and the site which speaks of your brand.   Second, as people customize their views, Googles search engine will become even more credible, as irrelevant content will vanish.   Lastly, there will be a full blown war with same-name individuals, such as the John Smiths of the world, who will purposefully be removing others sharing their name. Change how you walk to change your life We all know that people judge each other in the first five seconds they see each other. We talk about clothes, and weight , and tone of voice. But you can also judge someone by their walk. Dont tell me this is shallow. You cant help but judge people by their gait. But the good news is that we are very good at judging people on first impressions (sponsor link: download movies). Its probably a survival skill we developed very early on as humans before you could Google someone to know their credibility. And when it comes to gait, it is possible that we each have a unique gait, like a unique thumbprint. (Yes, people are developing security technology based on gait: Cool, right?) I am convinced that you can change how you function in the world by changing your gait. We already know that people with the most control over their image work hard on understanding the body language they project. For example, if you feel defensive, resist the temptation to fold your arms in front of your chest and the person youre talking to will think you are listening better. And, in fact, you will be listening better because based on your physical urge to fold your arms you gained intellectual awareness that you are feeling defensive. Scientists have taken body language analysis one step forward and found systematic ways to describe how gait relates to mood. The first career coach I ever had used this science. She taught me how to change my walk in order to exude more authority. I was a young upstart bouncing around the office and needed to look grounded. She showed me how to shift my center of gravity to lower in my body. And, in the process of changing my gait, she actually did change the way I approached people I exuded more authority. So here are personality traits that we reveal in how we walk. In each case, researchers have found that if you change the way you walk, you can change how you are living. 1. How well you think abstractly and plan in flexible ways. Researchers found that you can look at the fluidity of a persons gait to gauge the persons executive function. This is someones ability to look at range of issues and figure out what to do first, how to orchestrate a to-do list or a set of competing priorities. You can see this is people with Asperger Syndrome, or, the stereotypical eccentric genius. Their brain is working fine in terms of IQ, but their executive function is poor (Einstein couldnt manage to comb his hair), and so, too is their gait. You can go to physical therapy to smooth out your gait, and, in children, this process has been shown to improve executive function. 2. How well you play with others. When it comes to understanding what people are feeling by watching what their hands are doing, the best book is The Definitive Book of Body Language. And while you might be able to control your hands when you are sitting still (few people will bite their nails at a conference table, for example), hands are harder to control when people are walking. Someone who is walking with hands behind the back, is probably angry or frustrated. Hands in pockets conveys dejection. Clenched fists usually mean resisting others opinions. 3. How outgoing you are. Some people write about how people who are pigeon-toed are introverts. The research, I have to say, is not that convincing. But we intuitively believe this, if you think about it, because of all the visual stereotyping we do about pigeon-toed children and submissive women. And, frankly, I always think there is some truth to stereotyping, even though I know its not politically correct. 4. (If youre a woman) how easily you have an orgasm. Proving that stereotyping about gait is on target, it turns out that women who have a stride similar to models on a runway orgasm more easily. Really. There is convincing research to show that how long a womans stride is and how much a womans hips open while she walks indicates her ability to have a vaginal orgasm. People who were trained to judge a womans ability to reach orgasm by how she walked were able to judge it at an 80% success rate. What should you do with this research? Women, if you were doubting that changing your walk can change your life, the research also shows that if change how you walk you can make yourself orgasm more easily. And for the men: The London Times reports that the men who are best at giving women orgasms are also the richest men, so if you are thinking you want to make a lot of money in your career, maybe you should pay attention to the research about gait.

Food for Thought Happy Monday and welcome back from what was hopefully a nice, restful holiday weekend. I was good this year and did not stuff myself too much with turkey, pie and all the trimmings.
